Highbridge Human Capital is delighted to be working with the Adams Lake Band in the search for an Accounting Officer. The Adams Lake Indian Band (ALIB) belongs to the Secwepemc Nation. ALIB is a member of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council (SNTC); which consists of nine Secwepemc Bands.

The Adams Lake Indian Band Office strives to provide services for band members, consistent with the band’s vision and mission. The Chief and Council provide the political leadership and guidance to the Executive Director and managers, regarding programs and services for the benefit of community members.

Over the past decades, ALIB has grown tremendously, which has driven the charge for significant changes within the community. The band has developed new tools to deliver services in a changing world, which has resulted in greater and more varied opportunities to create and advance band programs, develop economic initiatives, and to provide meaningful employment to more individuals and families.

Reporting to and under the direction of the Finance Supervisor and/or designate, the Accounting Officer- is responsible for various functions for the Adams Lake Indian Band and its affiliated companies.

A day in the life of the Accounting Officer

Role and Responsibilities:

As the Accounting Officer, you will:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Adams Lake Indian Band laws, policies and procedures
  • Maintains the accounts payable sub-ledger, reconciling supplier’s invoices with ALIB purchase orders and ledger balances
  • Reconciles accounts payable sub-ledger to general ledger control accounts on a monthly basis
  • Maintains and provides a monthly accounts payable aged trial balance for review upon request
  • Receives, reviews and processes purchase orders and supplier’s payments
  • Receives, reviews and processes utility bills for direct payment
  • Prepares monthly schedule showing all utility charges to be recovered from staff and/or members and forwards to Finance Supervisor for reconciliation and A/R for recovery
  • Maintains an accurate accounting for the GST travel rebates for the Finance Supervisor to remit
  • Reconciles suppliers’ invoices with statements on a monthly basis
  • Maintains a record of voided cheques and the adjustments made to accounts payable sub-ledger
  • Ensures accurate input of data into accounting system (i.e.: Adagio)
  • Maintains accurate filing system for supplier/vendor with appropriate documentation
  • Processes travel claims for Chief & Council, Staff and various committees
  • Manages and issues Band credit cards, ensuring proper sign out and return, acting as back up to other Accounting Officers
  • Answers inquiries, provides information and forms as required
  • Ensure appropriate budget coding from all Departments prior to payments issued
  • Performs other related duties as required
  • Must participate in cross training in accounts payable, payroll, accounts receivable and bank reconciliation and other finance functions.

Requirements

  • Experience in a First Nations environment.
  • Post secondary education, including successful completion of first level accounting courses, preferred
  • Minimal of 2 years of experience in an accounting/bookkeeping environment
  • Possess strong computer skills using MS Word, Excel and Adagio accounting systems
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills to achieve desired results
  • Diplomacy, tact and confidentiality in dealing with a variety of people and information
  • Reliability and dependability
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team orientated environment
  • Flexibility is a must to adapt to changing work priorities
  • Good judgement must be exercise at all times
